Familial Protection and The Harsh Reality of the North

Journal Entry: April 8, 2026 Location: Ironheart / The Fjord Mood/Title: Familial Protection and The Harsh Reality of the North

Today was a day of stark contrasts, bridging the quiet administrative work of my new life here and the rough, uncompromising nature of my father’s world. Father arrived, and while his protective presence is a comfort, it also brings a certain intensity that is difficult to ignore. We spent a significant part of the day exploring the Fjord, eventually finding our way to a great hall that felt like a glimpse into a different, more primal existence. It is a massive, beautiful space, yet it serves as a reminder of the raw, unpolished reality of the North.

The visit with Rune, the local hold Jarl, was an education in itself. Watching Father navigate the social and political dynamics of this region—blunt, direct, and unyielding—was enlightening. His insistence on discipline, particularly regarding how our servants conduct themselves, is a sharp reminder of the power structures that define us. When he questioned the behavior of the servants, the tension was palpable; it is a world where a lapse in decorum can have immediate and severe consequences. I must remain vigilant; the expectations for a woman of my station are rigid, and I am still learning to navigate them without drawing unnecessary attention or inviting the kind of scrutiny Father seems to relish confronting.

The visit also highlighted how different the North is from the city life I have known. Here, safety and order are maintained not by laws on parchment alone, but by the strength of one's arm and the sharpness of one's steel. I am finding my footing, but it requires a constant adjustment of my own perceptions.

To Do:

  • Finalize the organizational files for the Academy, specifically the transition to the new, more permanent structures we are building.

  • Prepare my notes for the upcoming lecture on the "War of the Thassa" and the naval tactics of Port Kar.

  • Schedule a time to properly review the city's housing options now that Father has had a chance to see the area.

  • Check on the begonias—they are my small, peaceful patch of color in a world of grey stone and steel.
