Class Work, City News, and Olni’s Weekly Meeting

 Journal Entry: August 9, 2026

Location: Nile River, Olni, and Olni Var
Title: Class Work, City News, and Olni’s Weekly Meeting

I spent much of the day working on the Levels Classes scheduled for November and December. After completing a great deal of work, I realized that the dates would need to be corrected because the planned break weeks had not been properly included. Although discovering the problem was frustrating, it was better to find it now than after the full schedule had been completed.

I also checked the class calendar displays for Olni and Turmus. The upcoming lessons included The High Council and the Council of High Castes, Salt, Silk, Spice, and Steel: The Goods of Gorean Trade, and Bowing, Kneeling, and Other Gestures of Respect.

Later in the afternoon, I traveled from the Nile River to Olni and joined the weekly city meeting already in progress. Ubar Jarek SpiritWeaver presided over the gathering, with reports presented by the city’s castes and officials.

Lady Ana reported that the Scribes continued their work for Olni. She also announced my upcoming classes so that the citizens would know when and where the lessons would be held.

The Builders discussed ongoing adjustments and repairs throughout the city. Ubar Jarek reminded everyone that Second Life sometimes moves or damages objects unexpectedly and asked citizens to report anything that appeared misplaced or broken. Paul reported that work continued at the Inn and that walls in the infirmary had recently been repaired. A new city slave collar had also been completed and was already being worn by Vidya.

Lady Huntsy reported on the Physicians. She was updating the training program and reviewing the Physicians’ manual. Three possible Physician apprentices were awaiting confirmation, and Tura had received permission from her owner to begin training as a healing slave.

Lady Huntsy also announced a defense class humorously called Defense Against the Dark Arts. The training will teach Free Women and slaves how to support Olni’s defenders, reduce lag and scripts, adjust graphics settings for combat, and improve their ability to defend themselves with role-appropriate weapons. Classes will be offered at scheduled times, with private or individual instruction available when necessary.

Captain Falconer reported that Warrior training continued. Capture the Flag training was scheduled for Mondays and Fridays at 4:00 PM SLT, with arena training on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM SLT. Free men were encouraged to attend because every free man may be called upon to defend the Home Stone.

Ubar Jarek reminded everyone to learn how the combat meter works before an emergency occurs. He also stressed that people should practice with weapons appropriate to their role. A Free Woman or slave may perform well with a sword or bow during informal combat, but those weapons may not be permitted during an actual role-play situation. Olni remains a role-play city, and legitimate role-play must take precedence over combat for its own sake.

Lady Talora had little to report from the Ambassadors. She observed that Gor had been quiet, possibly because people were enjoying the last of summer and preparing for children to return to school.

Dain gave the Slaver’s report. The kennel currently had Ruby, Hana, Vidya, and Fire listed with their individual levels of availability and restriction. Aisha confirmed that there would be another slave class, although its subject had not yet been selected.

The most serious announcement concerned Venna. Because of difficult real-life family circumstances, Venna will be closing within approximately a week. Many of its people are expected to relocate to a new settlement on Olni lands near Dain’s outpost. They will be close enough to share Olni’s infirmary, library, and other resources while maintaining their own nearby community.

The Venna residents are expected to arrive through the docks later in the week. This information was shared out of character, and everyone was reminded that our characters have not yet learned what happened. The aftermath and arrival of the people of Venna will be introduced through role-play.

During the open forum, libbi announced that the following week’s OOC theme would be country music.

Captain Falconer then discussed Olni’s approaching seventeenth anniversary celebration and asked for volunteers. The celebration will take place on September 12 and 13, with no anniversary events held on September 11. Planned activities include tarn racing, turmit racing, dancing, slave captures, archery, a closing gathering, and Brew and Banter. Libbi offered to help place flags around the racetrack, and Paul volunteered to assist with the slave-capture event.

The next Saturday voice book reading will begin Priest-Kings of Gor. Brew and Banter following the meeting was also to be centered on the Priest-Kings.

The meeting ended with the traditional sounding of the Olni signal horns and calls honoring Olni, Ubar Jarek, and Lucy—the Valkyrie of the Quill and Spirit of the City.
