Fellowship Among Scribes and a Busy Day in Turmus

Locations: Tea Room and Turmus Square; my home; Magistrate Office; Scribe Hall and library mailbox; Slave House area; Trygg's office at Two Scimitars Oasis; Maitreya, On A Lark, and Kitty Creations.

Times: Early morning through evening, SLT.

⊰════════════════════════════⊱

My morning began in the Tea Room, where Odette welcomed me with warm chocolate-filled bread and my usual black wine. She asked about yesterday's classes. I told her that the first had gone well, but I had missed the second because the Scribe meeting continued into the class hour. The meeting had taken nearly two hours, including the time spent gathering. With weekly meetings now planned, I may need to offer only one Tuesday class if the overlap continues. Odette and I agreed that starting on time helps people learn to arrive on time.

Laela stopped by before leaving for work. She spoke warmly of her Master, but also shared that she needed some time away from roleplay to process difficult matters. I wished her well. Odette and I talked about the Dance Circle meetings, and I realized I had missed some. She also mentioned a small real-life stove fire, which naturally concerned me.

Cherry, Rhayne, and briefly Viktoria joined the morning gathering. Cherry asked whom she could approach among the Warriors and Scribes when she needed to make a report. I named Augustus Bade as our Head Warrior. She had already managed to speak with Kelli, but suggested that Warriors and Scribes should have identifying markers so people know whom to seek. She intended to raise that suggestion with him.

After the others left, I asked Odette for more black wine and her company. I teased that she knows my order better than people who have known me for years. She explained that remembering a guest's preferences is part of her profession, and I told her she does it well.

Later, I spent time with Kaellaed and Angel. Angel thanked me for her hammock and said it was comfortable. Kaellaed complimented her, and I was pleased to have this time together before we left for the Scribe Caste of Gor meeting.

Angel accompanied me to Trygg's office at Two Scimitars Oasis. The meeting reviewed the Third Scribe Summit, a proposed monthly meeting schedule, and the group's mission statement. I had not attended the summit myself, but my presentations had been supplied for use in my absence. Trygg spoke kindly of them, and Saku said he had done well presenting in my stead. I was sorry I could not have delivered them myself, but glad the work had been useful.

The group supported meeting on the first Wednesday of each month, with morning and evening sessions. Rather than requiring a formal lecture each time, volunteers would lead discussions about Scribe work in different cities. We also reviewed the mission statement. At Saku's suggestion, Trygg added explicit references to mentorship and advice on preserving records. I supported the revised wording.

Near the end, Saku announced that she would step down as Assistant Head of Scribes at Thunder Mountain, effective Tuesday, and explained out of character that she would be leaving Firestorm. Trygg thanked her and made clear that she would be welcome back.

After returning, Angel and I worked on her appearance and went shopping. I helped her check the fit of her clothing and the match between her face and body, while letting her know that she could make further adjustments to her liking. We visited On A Lark and Kitty Creations, looking at belts, outfits, and a camisk for house chores. I explained that the blue pants outfit would be her usual uniform, with other clothing for special occasions or work that might soil it. It was a cheerful outing; afterward, I told Odette it had felt rather like children browsing a shop full of sweet treats.

Around midday, I greeted people near the Slave House. Lilly was gathering information for the newspaper, while Orion asked about taking Kael fishing. Nicholas explained that a Turmus city slave could serve a Turmus Free for a day or night without a rental, and allowed the boy to accompany him.

When the legal bell rang, I answered Lothar's request for help finishing Dina's registration. He provided her medical examination and private slave registration papers. I checked them, asked to see the girl briefly, and added my seal. I returned a dated copy and explained that the remaining filing section belonged to the Record Keepers.

I guided Lothar to the library mailbox, where he deposited the papers. I reassured him that the signatures and seals supported his ownership claim while the city's recording work remained to be completed. I advised him to ask Aneesh Teardrop or Sphere Proto if he had not heard back in about a week. Dina also needed Turmus group tags, which I could not issue. I suggested Selia, or possibly Nicholas. Later, Lothar confirmed that she had received her tags, and I marked that part completed.

In the afternoon, I returned to the Tea Room. Tay prepared milk tea with a little honey for a change, and Odette and I talked about shopping, the growing number of merchants, and improvements to the inn. Lady Telima joined us while looking for a new home. She said she was now of the Merchant Caste and had previously been an innkeeper. Real-life matters called me away before that conversation went further.

Later, Kaellaed asked about the Scribe Caste of Gor meeting. I explained the summit review, the monthly schedule, and the mission statement. He also asked whether the group had an opinion on AI-written material or forms; no group position on that subject was established in the morning meeting. Trygg sent me the evening meeting transcript, giving me another record to review.

The day brought together the quieter pleasures of company and the practical work of a Scribe. I enjoyed my time with Angel and Odette, and was glad to help Lothar move his paperwork forward.

To Dos / Follow-up

  • Review the October 8 lesson, “Merchant Castes, Houses, and Trade Associations”; this was planned, but completion is not recorded.
  • Review the Tuesday class schedule with Kelli so the weekly Scribe meeting does not continue to overlap the 4 p.m. lesson. Offering only one Tuesday class remains a possibility, not a confirmed change.
  • Keep track of Dina's registration filing. If necessary, follow up with Aneesh or Sphere around October 14. Her group tags are already confirmed complete.
  • Review Trygg's evening meeting transcript.
  • Consider advertising Turmus classes through Scribe Caste of Gor* and offering a future discussion topic.
  • Check the Dance Circle notices and meeting times.
  • If Kaellaed still wants an answer about AI-written material or forms, seek clarification from Trygg; no group policy was stated in the morning meeting.

A Renewed Hall, a Return to Teaching, and Service to Turmus

Locations: Educational Hall, bakery, Tea House, Magistrate Office, and upstairs Scribe meeting room in Turmus.

Times: Early morning through late afternoon, SLT.

⊰════════════════════════════⊱

I began the day by giving the Educational Hall a new look. I worked on the furnishings and seating, hoping to make the room more comfortable and welcoming for those who come to learn. There is satisfaction in preparing a place where scrolls may be studied and questions asked.

Laela stopped by early in the morning. I told her that I was adjusting my lesson to reflect my work as Legal Clerk and updating material I had written months ago. She wished me well with the class. It would be good to teach again, and I hoped people would come.

Later, Carola and I went looking for breakfast pastries, as Odette had not set out fresh ones. A cheese and nutmeg pastry caught my attention. Carola offered to make tea or black wine so that we could take our pastries back to the Tea House. While we were near the bakery, Lothar passed with Alva, whom he struck and pulled away after she stopped to greet us. It was an unpleasant interruption to the morning.

I also spoke of a beautiful classroom that Cassian had told me I could use. Later, Kaellaed visited the Educational Hall and complimented the new design. I explained that I had nodded off after a short night and had not meant to leave him unanswered.

Before the noon class, I welcomed Carola, Kaellaed, Orion, and Storm. Carola mentioned that the inn was being renovated to include an office, and we spoke of the city's need for an innkeeper. I invited everyone to help themselves to a beverage and asked about the new cushions, hoping they were more comfortable than the old seating.

At noon, I taught “Tribute, Taxes, and the Wealth of Cities.” We discussed the authority behind public charges, receipts, custody of treasury holdings, authorized spending, emergency repairs, and the preservation of accurate records. Orion, Carola, and Storm contributed answers and questions throughout the lesson. Their participation made the subject a conversation rather than simply a reading of my notes.

When we discussed urgent repairs, I suggested bringing the need to the Ubara and following whatever emergency authority Turmus recognizes. Storm raised the possibility of a caste fund, something I had not considered. I enjoy teaching because I learn as well. The class concluded shortly after the hour, and the students offered kind thanks.

In the afternoon, I attended the Scribe Caste meeting. Before it began, the Magistrate Office bell rang, and I volunteered to answer it. Lothar requested an ownership signature for a slave named Dina. I returned quietly to the meeting afterward; the record does not show that his paperwork was completed.

Kelli welcomed the new Scribes and spoke about the importance of correct paperwork as Turmus grows. The meeting addressed the census, residence and Home Stone questions, seals, and our purpose as Scribes. When we discussed that purpose, I added that we are here to serve the citizens. Kelli agreed, reminding us that the citizens themselves are the city.

Jessika announced her plans for a Turmus newspaper and asked for news, sources, and contributions. Kelli also announced my appointment as Legal Clerk and explained that I could help with the correct and timely filing of legal scrolls. Aries offered kind words about the appointment.

I quietly offered to make seals for the Scribes, as I had done for the legal officials. After the meeting, I again asked Kelli whether he had given me access to the files and added me to the Legal Team. He also sent me the incident report filed by Cherry Audax that day. These are matters to carry forward in my work.

Class Summary — Tribute, Taxes, and the Wealth of Cities

Location: Educational Hall
Time: Noon–approximately 1:04 p.m. SLT
Participants recorded: Carola Aromata, Orion Pastorelli, Storm, and Kaellaed Rhode; Niki Sjostrom arrived during the opening portion.

The lesson distinguished public levies from ordinary prices and emphasized the authority required to impose, collect, hold, and spend city resources. Discussion covered receipts, treasury custody, reconciliation, competing civic needs, warning signs in financial records, and the effects of charges on trade.

Carola emphasized receipts as evidence of payment and identified important receipt details. Orion asked about emergency procedures and which caste maintains treasury records. Storm contributed to the discussion of spending authority and emergency funding.

I explained that original records should be preserved during an inquiry and that discrepancies justify investigation without establishing who is guilty. The students thanked me afterward.

Meeting Summary — Scribe Caste of Turmus

Location: Upstairs Scribe meeting room
Time: Approximately 3:15–4:56 p.m. SLT
Led by: Kelli, with Aries and Ubara Selia present.

  • Caste duties: Kelli welcomed the new Scribes and asked members to assist with ordinary Scribe work and assignments from him or Aries while awaiting individual meetings.
  • City security: Kelli stated that Turmus was not at war with Selnar, while visitors remained subject to its laws. Selia confirmed this and warned that northern declarations of war against southern cities required vigilance.
  • Merchant matters: Kelli confirmed that he would handle Merchant Magistrate duties when needed during Ramius's absence.
  • Census: Scribes should review the census form and have new citizenship applicants complete it alongside their application. Completed forms may go into the scribal mailbox in front of the library or be handed to Sphere.
  • Residence and Home Stone: A person may reside in Turmus while retaining another Home Stone. Aries explained that applications to swear Turmus's Home Stone may be made, with ceremonies usually following city meetings. Kelli clarified that the household-name field refers to the household rather than a rented building. Selia offered help with house rentals.
  • Document authentication: Kelli instructed that signatures require seals under Turmus policy. If no known seal is available, a Scribe should record that fact beneath the signature and sign and seal the statement. He confirmed that recognizable generic caste seals are acceptable. Selia described stopping an ownership claim supported by an unsealed bill of sale.
  • Scribe seals: Kelli told Lilly he could provide a seal after she had been in Turmus for two weeks. I offered to prepare seals for the Scribes.
  • Purpose of the caste: Members discussed preserving knowledge and records, maintaining trust, and providing guidance and stability. I added service to citizens, which Kelli affirmed.
  • Newspaper: Jessika announced a Turmus newspaper and requested news, sources, stories, advertisements, and other contributions.
  • Legal Clerk: Kelli announced my appointment and my assistance with filing legal scrolls. Aries expressed his support.
  • Future meetings: Kelli said meetings would be held weekly and encouraged members to bring questions and ideas.
