As volleys of arrows descending,

On the army of steel and leather,

Split the dark skies, flying together.

[16:43] Panner McDonnell: Some found the gap 'tween breastplate and helm,

Then cries pierced that ethereal realm.

Ghostly sounds of agonizing pain,

Thrashed my ears and invaded my brain.

[16:44] Panner McDonnell: The nearest set fell into a heap,

A form appeared, and began to weep.

The apparition inside cried out,

"Please, give us peace!" it said with a shout.

[16:44] Panner McDonnell: I felt its pain, I rushed to its side,

The ghost in armor quietly cried.

"We are forced to live every day,

'Till eternity passes away,

[16:44] Panner McDonnell: "Repeating our death, our peace is spurned,

Until, some day, our lesson is learned."

"What lesson?" I asked.  His skin turned white.

"The Forgotten Code:  Why do we fight?

[16:45] Panner McDonnell: "Red Castes are noble, but battle lust,

Sullies one's Honor, turns it to rust.

Fight for the weak, defend the Home Stone!

Honor restored, they'll leave me alone."

It made me think of what I most feared.

Not my life given up in a fight,

But Honor lost to that endless night.

Seeking perhaps to plunder scraps to snatch away with tips

of hungry bills, the leavings of what food that men let slip

[16:52] Sayyadina (jetis.umia) had slipped in during a quiet moment, her tasks complete, tto fin the woman renting her and kneeling demurely behind her, so she might observe an listen.

[16:52] Panner McDonnell: "Now, those who know me know I need to tell you at least once, of an honorable warrior.  But, there is always a twist!"

[16:53] Panner McDonnell: "The Warrior's Poem"

[16:53] Panner McDonnell: I tell of a warrior, honor lost,

An outlaw beyond the gate.

His fire and his cloak fended off the frost,

But nothing could ease his fate.

[16:53] Panner McDonnell: Words had been exchanged, then a fight ensued.

The son of a wealthy man,

Lay dead. When an arrest warrant was issued,

The warrior up and ran.

[16:53] Panner McDonnell: One might think he would travel far away,

Then hide and pillage and steal.

Instead he would harvest a crop all day,

And his fee?  A simple meal.

[16:54] Panner McDonnell: He'd weed peasants' farms to increase their yield,

And haul to market their load.

All night he might guard livestock in a field,

But always near the main road.

[16:54] Panner McDonnell: The peasants kept secret his location,

Though they could not understand,

Why a man of his skill and high station,

Chose to work on their land.

[16:54] UnformedThought (daricmarano) leaned into Tayir as she whispered and he nodded, before a gesture to send her on her way. A look given, before he took a drink from his wine. A look shot to Shelby, before he downed what remained in his goblet.

[16:54] Panner McDonnell: One day he announced to the peasants there,

"The army is on the move!

I hear the crunch of their shoes in the air,

And I have something to prove.

[16:54] Panner McDonnell: "I will follow the road off their left flank,

And see if they need any aid.

My friends, I am dishonored, to be frank.

I hope you are not dismayed."

[16:55] Panner McDonnell: They bade him fare well as he left that night,

To follow the army's path.

It was not with anger he sought a fight.

His hope?  Redemption, not wrath.

[16:55] Panner McDonnell: His chance came too soon.  He watched from a hill.

The fight began to unfold.

The first echoes of steel gave him a thrill,

He saw their lines try to hold.

[16:55] Panner McDonnell: The enemy feinted off to the right.

The left flank took the real blow.

And as tarnsmen dueled above the main fight,

The left flank began to bow.

[16:56] Panner McDonnell: As men fell the flank began to collapse.

The reserves rushed forth to stem,

The surging wave bursting in through the gaps,

And beyond, none to stop them.

[16:56] aria (nabila.daffyd) gasps and holds her breath for this epic tale

[16:56] Panner McDonnell: "Now! Now is my time!" he yelled as he ran,

One man towards the raging flood.

Like a mad dervish his slaughter began,

Soon, his clothes were soaked with blood.

[16:56] Panner McDonnell: The foe were on his old friend, the Ubar,

Our warrior cut them down,

The field soon resembled an abattoir,

The enemy swarmed around.

[16:56] Panner McDonnell: "Who fights just beyond us?" the Ubar asked,

As he parried one more blow.

"It is the man you threw out of our caste,

Not that many hands ago!"

[16:57] Panner McDonnell: "On my oath, he's brave! His battle cry cuts,

Nearly as sharp as his blade!

But it's all for naught, in spite of his guts.

Our defeat is clearly made."

[16:57] Panner McDonnell: He fought with skill, but his wounds were many.

The foe began to surround,

His hope to redeem?  There wasn't any,

They began to cut him down.

[16:57] Panner McDonnell: Then the foe's back rank began to fall down!

A mass surged beyond their rank.

It was the peasants from outside the town.

Who swarmed on their rear and flank.

[16:58] Panner McDonnell: The fight was over in just a few ehn.

The enemy, broken, ran.

And now our friend's reckoning could begin

They knelt by our wounded man.

And said, "Be still, and at ease.

Your courage will be told throughout the land,

And your song upon the breeze."

With blood bubbles on his breath.

"Sometimes the only soap allowed to cleanse,

Foul deeds is the truth of death."

And placed it to guard their field.

He rumbled lowly to her, his eyes on the stage.
