Immediate To-Do List
Log On: Be in-world after 4:30 PM SLT (approx 7:30 PM EST).
Swearing In: Meet Declanu at the Hall to take your oaths as both Scribe and Magistrate.
Get Materials: Receive the Caste Codes, Training Manuals, and the "Evidence" logs regarding the former scribes.
Slave Registration: Fill out completed applications to register your two slaves.
Group Invite: Watch for an invitation to the Scribes group (Declanu will send when he gets home).
Learn Reporting: Review how Angelica (AHOC/Archivist) wants Notecards (NCs) turned in.
Job Role & Expectations
Title: Master Magistrate (but expected to help with general scribe duties due to staffing shortages).
Supervisor: Declanu Karn (HOC).
Key Colleagues:
Angelica: AHOC and Archivist.
Gil: Chief Magistrate.
Dress Code: There is a specific dress code for the Hall and while performing duties.
Seal: You may use your personal seal or the city seal (your choice).
Performance: Expectations are accuracy, integrity, and timeliness. Be "right, firm, courteous, and impartial."
Inactivity: Scribes are removed after 1 month of unexplained inactivity.
Training Requirements
Mandatory Refreshers: Even as a Master, you must complete Declanu's specific training manuals (Intermediate and Master level).
Languages: You will be taught High Gorean and Merchant Cant, specifically how to spot/write hidden clauses and "trap words" in legal documents.
Memorization: You must study the Caste Codes.
Special Assignment: The "Hothead"
Task: You are assigned to mentor a new male Initiate.
Warning: He is described as a "hothead/firecracker" and has been abusive to females in the past.
Directive: If he steps "a hair over the line" or is anything less than polite, report him to Declanu immediately.
His Duties: He has daily written assignments; if he misses one, he faces punishment.

Declanu: I'm told you seek to be a scribe

Declanu: I am Declanu Karn Scribe HOC in Var-Kor
Kati: Tal. It is nice to meet you, I am Lady Kati Evans. I am interested in talking about it yes. I am a master magistrate with 15 years of real experience by trade, just resigned the position of ahoc over at Teletus.
Declanu: Tell me about you the writer, your character, your qualifications and your playing style?
Kati: That is an interesting way to put it as I being "me" to the table. I say that Kati as you will get to know her is my heart. She cries when I do, she laughs when I do, she responds as I would. I being my knowledge and 15 years of study of Gor to the table. I being my professional experience and knowledge with me. I bring my life long experiences and work ethic as well. I put is 5 - 16 hours a day on most days. I miss one or two now and then for real things like Thanksgiving.
Kati: I intend on getting to know people and not be all about work this time around. I get to have some fun visiting and talking with people. I was in the beginning stages of a 13 week teaching session of the laws to the people of the city; with lectures, plays, poems, storytellers, and forums. That I still want to do which was going to be January or February start. Big projects like that take time to develop. I am on the Scribe Castes of Gor and intend to continue there and I will help with En'Kara coming up.
Kati: I do have a natural talent for being a magistrate so I do enjoy that. If given a place to work I will put out my appointment book and a few things somewhere. Recently I was adopted by WIND and do enjoy having a father again. As a magistrate I am fair and do read the scrolls regularly to stay sharp. Continuing to research and study various topic on any give day. Where is Var-Kor located? I have not found it in any of my current collection of scrolls.
Declanu: I see in your profile you are Caroline galluses scribe mentor. Tell me about this relationship.
Kati: Was. Where is Var-Kor?
Declanu: I was going to ask if you knew she and her sister were expelled from the scribes caste and how would you handle that situation as a magistrate.
Kati: Where is Var-Kor?
Declanu: I have been asking for a location of it myself as I need to place it accurately on a map.
Kati: Well being as their story differ from that, I came wanting to hear your side of the story.
Declanu: My side stands as fact with both rp's saved. One rp was in front of the magistrate and the second in front of the magistrate and my ahoc present. There were a slew of deficiencies in both on their part. They were both expelled for insubordination. The issues with Caroline were noted in front of the magistrate and those were overridden. I am still and that was Caroline's legal protector.
Kati: I am not meaning to put you on the defensive. It is just the first time that I have had a chance to ask you what happened then. My apologies if you took it as anything more than just wanting to hear from you.
Declanu: All legal documents were and are on file in that matter. I am more than willing to give the rp's to you and you can decide for yourself. I stand behind my decisions and actions. I am a very strict HOC, very BTB and very old gor.
Kati: That would be nice if you would let me see the records for myself.
Declanu: I do demand that scribes in my hall do the training courses I have written as I don't like the quality of the teachings currently. When i get home I'm happy to provide them. I do have a dress code for my scribes while they are in the hall or out performing their duties.
Kati: I would be honored to look over both the records and the training courses.
Declanu: Are you able to voice right now as this is alot to type at work.
Kati: Not at this time, sorry.
Declanu: It is not look them over it will be retraining, to ensure my scribes meet my standards as I will not stand for a scribe not knowing their duties and bringing shame upon my name as a result. So all scribes in my hall will do the training.
Kati: I did not mean it in that way.
Declanu: For a seasoned scribe it will be a good refresher.

Declanu: I know you didn't. The gallus girls have given me no choice but to take a hard posture until a scribe has earned my trust. I have over 20 years in sl gor. Over 35 years in html gor, I have played every role from carpenter to torturer to ubar to name a few. I try to know my writers as it helps to understand their characters and their stories.
Kati: After the position I just left, and not because of the HOC, I understand in some respects. Then you have more experience than I do. I have only been a magistrate for the 15 years in SL Gor. It was different when I started.
Declanu: As far as my knowledge in the scribes I am a 6th level or master scribe. All of gor was different then from now. Some of the advanced training I do for my advanced scribes will in writing documents with hidden clauses and trap words in high gorean and merchant cant. Do you speak high gorean or merchant cant?
Kati: It appears not, I don't recall them being mentioned even back when I started.
Declanu: I have completed writing all scribe courses and will begin offering them to aspiring scribes and current scribes. As I said no longer have faith in the curriculum of gu and gc as they are teaching to my standards. Well then I have many things to teach your mind.
Kati: It appears so.
Declanu: Learning is how we keep the scribes vibrant and show the world the quill is stronger than a blade. I will accept and honor you experience and credentials. But you will be expected to do these refresher courses and intermediate and master level courses. I will also be assigning you an initiate scribe to mentor. You may do your refresher courses with your pupil guiding him as he does them or on your own. If you still choose to be a scribe in my hall we will set a time for me to administer your oaths as a scribe and a magistrate.
Kati: Thank you and yes I will accept.

Declanu: What I expect of my scribes is accuracy integrity and timeliness. My magistrates I expect you to be right firn courteous and impartial. On both sets of expectations if a scribe/magistrate do those then I can always have your back. I will also pass the caste codes to you to help guide you. These will be memorized by initiates and apprentice scribes.

Declanu: Now on your initiate scribe he is hmmm how do I say it. A hothead a firecracker..... So if he steps a hair over the line with you I want know immediately. Declanu: I will have you both present for the ic and I will emphasize all of this to him. He will have daily written assignments due. If he misses turning in one assignment his ass is mine.

Kati: How many scribes so we have? Is there a staff board somewhere? Or a list of active ones.
Declanu: I believe you make 5 and the initiate will make 6. I only keep active scribes.
Kati: How long do you allow before they are removed if they are not?
Declanu: 1 month. If I have received no explanation for inactivity.
Kati: Oh very generous then.
Declanu: That date coincides with our weekly Sunday staff meeting.
Kati: Oh ..... when Sunday?
Declanu: My days off from work are Sunday and Monday. I work for the United States Postal Service.
Kati: What time on Sunday is the meeting held, I have family things Sunday.
Declanu: 10am or 2pm slt either time. If someone can't make either time message me and we will work it out. Sunday is also the day I publish updates to city forms.
Kati: City Forms... and they are where?
Declanu: There is a cabinet on the ground floor and a bookcase outside my office with blank forms. On Sundays any changes we make to the form is handed to all scribes if there are changes to them. This way a scribe always has the current form. The archives are on the opposite wall on the ground floors of the blanks.
Kati: Perfect.
Declanu: I am hard but I'm fair, I might grow on ya in time. Oh.
Kati: That seems highly likely.
Declanu: And if you have anyone harassing you ooc let me know there is a thrall who has been warned of this.
Kati: I will remember that.
Declanu: People will learn to not harass my scribes especially my female scribes.

Declanu: Yw. What else do you have questions on? Oh my slave and my companion are both German, so be patient with them they are both learning English.
Kati: I do have two slaves that will need to be registered, and I will fill out a completed application, etc. Thank you for telling me as I like to help not hinder those who speak other languages. (They are doing something I have trouble with... another language.)
Declanu: Shit I have trouble with English lol. We will go over how Angelica wants nc's turned in. Angelica is my AHOC and archivist.
Kati: Same here lol - I am no writer.
Declanu: We have Gil who is our chief magistrate and I'm guessing you would like to be a magistrate primarily.
Kati: Primarily. but I do other things too.
Declanu: We are short staffed so everyone is asked to do more than their specialty.
Kati: That should not be a problem. My own seal or does the city have one for work?
Declanu: Oh this initiate and all new initiates will go in front of all of the scribes when they join so that all our scribes might interview them. The seal is your choice. The training manuals are designed so that when a person completes it they have a feeling of accomplishment, a passage to an elite group. So keep that in mind when interviewing them. We want quality not quantity. They should feel how you felt when you graduated, this will instill that you all are elite scribes that I have put forth.
Kati: Nods
Declanu: And one day you scribes taught by me will be the most elite sought after scribes in Gor.
Kati: grins
Declanu: So keep your mind open as we evolve the scribes.

Declanu: As a HOC it is now my duty to you all I know so one day ones you will mentor and teach will push the bar higher. I'm always here for questions or just to chat with. Don't be shy. And yes I am an open book on anything including Caroline/Catherine.

Declanu: Ok. And i know you have questions on those two gals. Ask them or wait for the rp's either is fine. I can say this. Catherine was threatened with a punishment collar as was Caroline. It didn't mean they were getting one. Caroline overstepped herself and forgot I am legally her protector which gives me a much broader Avenue to deal with her insubordination. You will see in the rp's.
Declanu: All of this started because Catherine didn't register her slave and when she submitted the paperwork it was incorrect. Icly I blew a fuse and threw a chair from my office against a wall. As any proud gorean man would. Caroline had an issue with that. That was in the first rp. So would you ever hand paperwork to your HOC that was late and incorrectly done? Would you as an ahoc or a hoc not lose trust in their ability to perform their duties?
Kati: Not on purpose (though sometimes real gets in the way... like when I landed in the hospital for a few days.)
Declanu: This had nothing to do with Real life.
Kati: I see.
Declanu: My ahoc and I watched her parade around the city with her new unregistered slave for days. Anyone with common sense would register their slave asap or at least submit the documents to the mailbox at the hall asap. Catherine was stripped of her ambassador title and duties and ordered to do retraining.
Declanu: Caroline and her insubordination now that was a more delicate decision to be made and I hadn't thought out her punishment fully at that point but she was relieved of her ambassador duties in the meantime. They chose to quit VK and that left me with no option but to expel them from the caste. That is the short version of events.
Kati: Sounds a bit more complete than the version I first heard.
Declanu: The rp's will show everything in its entirety and show my integrity.
Kati: As for seeing them we are suppose to get together this evening. My hope is that me talking with them is not going to be a problem with you.
Declanu: As long as it doesn't impact the performance of your duties in VK. I impose no restrictions on you as you are not my ward. I am certain you know how to conduct yourself and not be charged with treason.
Kati: I see not reason why it would as I am not taking my work with me, nor do I feel like discussing it with them other than maybe a passing comment. Thank you.
